A list of things for December 2024
I am not sure if I have ever known a New Year's celebration as a true celebration rather than a overcompensatory effort to make a celebration happen. I think I, and those I found myself with, were almost always trying too hard. It's hard not to. What could be more disappointing than not feeling confident in the sum of the past year or the potential of the coming year? It's worth at least playing at confidence, just for fun, just for the celebration.
But I got older and more sedentary and less social, and I let go of New Year's celebrations. Then I got more serious about resolutions and habits and changes, which is fine and useful and sometimes even fun, but now I've begun to let go of those as well. Now there's just a gentle turning of the page. I still tally up the last year and craft some hopes for the next. It's just quieter. Turns out, there are actually a lot of different ways to celebrate.
Happy New Year, friends. Wishing you peace and confidence and whatever kind of celebrations you like best.
Here is a list of things for the last month of 2024.
- I finally posted a new collection of stuff I've been reading, watching and listening to: Recently 02 December.
- I also refreshed my website design, updated my links, added a page for my videos, and added a cool new photo of me with a giant skeleton. I plan to post there much more frequently in the coming year.
- My little horror podcast, Quiet Little Horrors, released three new episodes, the first two on the absolute terror inspired by women with no children or with children via unconventional means: Bunny Lake Is Missing, and The Devil's Bath. We also released our 2024 review, including our favorite episodes, our favorite new and new-to-us films, and what we're looking forward to watching in 2025.
- One of the best things I've done for my mental health lately is join the Far Side subreddit, the digital equivalent of a cartoon-a-day calendar on my desk. Recommended.
- Hey did you know you can go to Disney World and have the Disney photographers just take cool photos of you for no reason at all except you want them to. It's true.
After a bit of a break, I'm back on Bluesky. I have, however, decided to stop intermittently posting and perpetually lurking on Twitter, so if you're looking for those sort of updates from me, it's all over on Bluesky now. If you enjoy the newsletter, please feel free to spread the word in whichever places you tend to frequent. As always, you can reach me by email, should you wish to do such a thing, at [email protected].
Thank you for reading! I'm grateful for you. 🖤.
