A list of things for April 2025
Well, hello. Fancy meeting you around here. It's been a minute. As I've noted before, winters tend to throw me off track. I've missed a couple of newsletter editions. But I'm back.
In the meantime, I mostly watched movies. I went to New Orleans (pictured above) and the Overlook Film Festival, then came back home for a week and a half of David Lynch films. I've mostly been quietly trudging my way through life and taking in input. Maybe one of these days I'll cycle back around to output.
Here's a list of things from April.
- On my website, I posted two round-ups of things read, watched and listened to: Recently: 28 February and Recently: 20 April.
- My little horror film podcast, Quiet Little Horrors, took an impromptu break for April, but released episodes throughout February and March. First we covered our favorite vampires and then the vampire films I Like Bats and Martin. Then we moved into Bergman March Madness and discussed Cries and Whispers and Hour of the Wolf.
- I saw the first Frida Kahlo paintings I've ever seen in person, so that was cool. Recommended: going and looking at some art.
- "I don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night. I want my sleep. For me, I approach everything as 'just do it,' and out of doing it comes the creativity. It’s not, 'Let me sit on a block of ice and wait for inspiration.' That never works. I don’t care about that. I’m plenty inspired all the time. I’m just, 'Let’s get to work, boys.' 'Okay. Here we go.' That does it." John Carpenter on creativity.
- As mentioned, I saturated myself this past month in David Lynch films, including documentaries about Catherine Coulson and Jack Nance (who both passed years previously), and, a few months after David's own passing, it made me think things. Mostly things about death, in the sense of illuminating the shape and scope of life, and the deliberation and care we take in that act of shaping and scoping. It's been a contemplative and sort of spiritual time lately. Could be worse.
I've been pretty active over on Bluesky, but I'm taking another social media break for at least the first couple weeks of May. You can catch up with me later there if you are so inclined. If you enjoy the newsletter, please feel free to spread the word in whichever places you tend to frequent. As always, you can reach me by email, should you wish to do such a thing, at [email protected].
Thank you for reading! I'm grateful for you. 🖤
